Mr Chee Wai Meng (WaiMeng.Chee@taylors.edu.my)
Mr Ramar Subramaniam (sramar@taylors.edu.my)
Objective:
This subject enable me to study and explore the the importance of preparation of Tender Document and the importance of the ability to work effectively with teammates to complete the assignments. Besides that it provide me a chance to investigate and explore the subject knowledge on the principles of measurement of various elements. Moreover, its enable me to develop the skill of making decision and management skills related to quantity surveying profession in the preparation of Bills of Quantities.
Learning Outcomes:
Throughout the process of learning the course of Measurement 5, I would be able to identify the items measurable for cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works. Besides that, I had learnt how to differentiate and explain the difference in writing up descriptions in accordance to design changes of cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M&E works and civil engineering works. I also learnt how to evaluate the relationship between specifications, drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works.
This subject also provides me a chance to prepare the measurement for cold water sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works in accordance to Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2) and Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (MYCESMM). Furthermore, I understood and able to carry out the preparation of Bills of Quantities for cold water and sanitary plumbing, electrical installation and M & E works and civil engineering works.
Course work 1
Course work 1 consist of a mid term test which contributed a total mark of 25% to the overall assessment which was conducted at week 7. This test is to enable the students to know how far they had progress. Besides, they would master the topics that the lecturer has taught. After they have this subject test, they will be able to do taking off more efficiently and effectively. They would not forget the topics that they have studied and will understand more on the particular topics they had been tested.
Course work 2
Course work 2 comprises of a group assignment which contributed a total mark of 25% of the overall assessment and students need to submit it on the week 8. This group assignment was designed for 5 students per group and the students was required to measure the area and volume of earthwork cut and fill based on the information given in the assignment brief. Finally we need to state the codings and clauses for each item and then do the Bill of Quantities.
This group assignment expose the students to the actual field and student would gain some basic knowledge on the measurement of earthworks. Besides, the students will also came to know the items that can be measured for earthworks. Upon completion of the group assignment, we would be able to understand and uses the codings and clauses in MYCESMM for the various trades related to earthworks. Furthermore, the students would be learned to demonstrate s systematic and orderly to start off the assignment. Besides, they would be able to visualize the drawing and details given in the brief. Thus we would have a clearer figure of what earthworks is when we are out in the field next time.
Apart from that, we also would generate a conceptual understanding of and able to carry out the preparation of the Bills of Quantities for earthworks according to MYCESMM.
